Shigemasa was primarily a book illustrator and during his career he provided the drawings for more than two hundred picture books. One of these books, entitled Haikai Na No Shiori (i.e., Haikai Guide to Names), was published in 1781 and included the twenty-eight pages of flower or bird pictures shown in this gallery. The book was a guide to the names of some of the flowers and birds used in haikai poetry to suggest a particular season of the year to a poem’s readers.
